Meet the Book Woman

Joanne is a teacher with 20 years of experience as a reading specialist in Title I schools.

Before writing Josh Loves Football, she interviewed many of her reluctant readers in grades two through four and found that 90% of them would choose to read a book about football.

Joanne researched the availability of children’s books on the topic of football. She found there are plenty of football books written at a Grade 3 reading level or higher, but there are hardly any written on a first or second grade level which is the reading level of most of these reluctant readers!
